A Fresh Take by Vero Beach Interior Designer, Jill Shevlin

What is Coastal Modern Design?

Coastal Modern is a design style that combines the relaxed and casual elements of coastal or beach-inspired aesthetics with the clean lines and contemporary sensibilities of modern design. It seeks to capture the essence of coastal living without relying on traditional or cliché beach-themed decor.

Key features of Coastal Modern design include a neutral color palette inspired by coastal landscapes, such as sandy whites, soft grays, and muted blues. Natural materials like jute, rattan, and reclaimed wood are often used to evoke the textures found in coastal environments. Clean lines, minimalist furniture, and a focus on simplicity contribute to the modern aspect of the style, ensuring that the design feels fresh, uncluttered, and up-to-date.

Nautical elements are incorporated subtly and tastefully, avoiding the use of overly literal or stereotypical items. The goal is to create a space that feels both sophisticated and relaxed, embracing the easygoing lifestyle associated with coastal living while incorporating contemporary design principles. Overall, Coastal Modern design aims to bring a sense of tranquility and modern elegance to spaces inspired by coastal or beach settings.

Hey there, beach lovers! It's Jill Shevlin here, your go-to Vero Beach Interior Designer for all things Coastal Modern. Today, I'm spilling the beans on how to transform your beach house into a haven of chic and contemporary vibes, steering clear of the cliché beach pieces we've all seen a thousand times. So, grab a piña colada, kick back, and let's dive into the world of Coastal Modern design!

1. Start with a Neutral Canvas:

Creating that fresh, breezy atmosphere begins with a neutral palette. Think sandy whites, soft grays, and muted blues to mimic the tones of the beach. These hues not only open up your space but also serve as a perfect backdrop for the pops of color we'll add later.

2. Mix Textures Like a Pro:

Avoid the trap of monotony by introducing a variety of textures. Incorporate natural materials such as jute, rattan, and reclaimed wood. These elements add warmth and depth, evoking the feeling of walking along the shoreline.

3. Embrace Clean Lines and Minimalism:

Coastal Modern is all about simplicity. Opt for clean-lined furniture pieces and avoid clutter. Minimalistic design not only looks sophisticated but also allows the natural beauty of your coastal surroundings to take center stage.

4. Nautical Accents Done Right:

We've seen enough anchors and lifebuoys, haven't we? Instead, subtly infuse nautical elements into your décor. Consider a statement piece like a ship's wheel hung as wall art or sleek, brass porthole mirrors for that touch of maritime flair.

5. Play with Patterns:

Break away from the monotony of solid colors by introducing patterns that resonate with the sea. Geometric prints, subtle stripes, and organic shapes on throw pillows, rugs, or even wall art can add visual interest without being overbearing.

6. Artwork with a Coastal Twist:

Ditch the predictable seascapes and opt for contemporary artwork that reflects the coastal lifestyle in a unique way. Abstract interpretations of waves, marine life, or even beach scenes can elevate your space while steering clear of the ordinary.

7. Greenery is Key:

Bring the outdoors in with an abundance of greenery. Low-maintenance plants like succulents and palm varieties thrive in coastal environments and add a touch of nature to your space, contributing to the overall relaxed atmosphere.

8. Lighting Matters:

Illuminate your Coastal Modern haven with lighting that mirrors the play of sunlight on the waves. Opt for fixtures with a beachy vibe, like woven pendant lights or driftwood-inspired table lamps. Soft, warm lighting enhances the cozy, inviting feel of your beach house.

In a nutshell, achieving a Coastal Modern look for your beach house is all about balancing the breezy charm of coastal living with a contemporary edge. So, bid adieu to those tired beach clichés and let your space tell a unique, stylish story. Remember, it's not just a home; it's your Coastal Modern sanctuary.

Favorite Finds Jill Shevlin Design Vero Beach Coastal Home Decor Pottery Barn Finds

I am always on the hunt for great home decor products.  These days I spend more time on the computer than I do in showrooms and stores.  I think that's true for just about everyone though....the times they are a changing.

Today I spent some time looking at Pottery Barn.  Although I have not been much of a fan of their products in the past, I think they have upped their game and come out with some interesting pieces.  Mixed with items from other sources of course, I would never suggest decorating an entire home from one store.

Today's favorite finds are coastal inspired, with a touch of modern.  Just the way I like it.
