Casual Interior Design for Courtyard Living

I brought Jill in to help me expand my vision of how I wanted this home to look. Her access to wonderful fabric, furniture, and accessories is what brought a simple, relaxed elegance to this home.

The outdoor courtyard is the star of this home in Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club. The courtyard’s Caribbean ambiance — complete with an outdoor shower, stunning pool, and romantic lighting — makes the home feel like a retreat.

The homeowners had recently left a traditional 1910 home in the North and were ready for a change. They knew they wanted a casual interior design touch with a neutral color palette to create a calm, unhurried feel. Jill Shevlin Design elevated their vision with elegant fabrics and furnishings that brought the entire courtyard home together without losing the flavor of the clients’ laidback lifestyle.

Inside, the sunny and bright great room is the perfect place to lounge, relax, and watch TV with kids and dogs alike. Jill crafted this warmly-decorated space with the intention for use. Two couches on which to comfortably stretch out  are ideal for afternoon reading and cozy evenings at home. However, it’s the addition of millwork around the fireplace that packs the biggest punch. By incorporating a balance of architectural details and simple elegant design, what was already the focal point of the room was further enhanced with fine woodworking techniques.

The comfortable and casual room contains touches of sophisticated accessories, like an antiqued mirror and large blue and white floor vases. The great room seamlessly flows into the kitchen and connected dining room for a casual meal experience in a beautiful yet informal space.

A lovely back-screened porch provides incredible views of the mangroves and palms of Boot Lake. This area also features an outdoor rug, comfortable outdoor chairs, and a coffee table meant for tranquil mornings spent bird-watching with a cup of coffee — or quiet evenings of sunset-viewing over glasses of wine.

The master bedroom is a spacious sanctuary with furnishings, fabrics, and accessories from a color palette of ivory, white, and grey hues.  With beachy accents and direct access to the courtyard’s pool and hot tub, the master bedroom makes one feel as if they’re waking up on vacation every day.  This casual interior design project utterly embodies the clients’ desire for a crisp, clean, livable space they’re proud to call home.
