Built-In Cabinetry:

Stylish and Functional Solutions

Oh yeah!  Built In cabinetry is one of my favorite design features to incorporate into my design projects.  They look amazing in any room and the style options and possibilities are endless.  Here I'm sharing just a few of the built in cabinets I have recently installed as well as the features and design tips for incorporating them into your home.

Home Office

When designing a home office, functionality and style often go hand in hand. And let’s be honest—a clutter-free, organized workspace is the dream, right? Built-in shelves or book cases are the perfect solution to achieve both. If you’re a Vero Beach homeowner incorporating modern built-ins will elevate any space.

Why Choose Built-In Shelves for Your Home ?

Built-in cabinetry offers a seamless, tailored look that freestanding furniture simply can’t compete with. They maximize storage space while keeping the room polished and uncluttered. Here’s why they’re an interior designer’s secret weapon:

  • Space Efficiency: Built-ins are customized to fit your room’s exact dimensions, making the most of every nook and cranny.
  • Design Versatility: From clean, minimalist styles to more detailed finishes, they can adapt to any aesthetic.
  • Boost Resale Value: Let’s not forget that custom elements like built-ins add a premium touch to your home.
  • They Look Amazing:  In addition to all of the above, there is no denying they Look Great!

Features of Modern Built-In Shelves

The modern home isn’t just about looks; it’s about functionality too. Here are some of the key features to consider:

1. Neutral Tones with Warm Accents

Incorporate natural wood finishes, like rift-cut oak, for a modern but welcoming feel. This timeless look complements a range of design styles, from contemporary to coastal. (Check out the photo of one of my recent projects for inspiration!)

2. Integrated Lighting

Add picture lights or LED strips for a soft glow that highlights your favorite books or décor. Functional and chic—it’s a win-win.

Below you can see the LED lights we just had installed in a Traditional Office Built In. This custom his and hers desks were designed with every desire of the homeowners.  Two desks with garage door to hide all the mess away, storage for two printers one of which is a beastly 150lbs and huge!  Room for the TV and display.  It was a challenge, but we managed to get it all done.

3. Ample Storage

Mix open shelving with closed cabinetry to balance display and hidden storage. Open shelves are perfect for showcasing your personality with books and accents, while cabinets hide the chaos of office supplies.

4. Tailored Details

Crown molding or recessed paneling can add subtle sophistication. Want to make a statement? Opt for bold hardware on cabinet doors or unique shelving layouts.

Design Tips for Incorporating Built-Ins

Plan Your Layout

Start by assessing your storage needs. Do you need space for books, files, or decorative items? Customizing your built-ins ensures every inch serves a purpose.

Add Texture and Personality

Layer the shelves with a mix of materials. Combine hardcover books, woven baskets, and framed artwork for a curated yet lived-in look.

Prioritize Functionality

If this is a working home office, be sure to incorporate outlets and charging stations discreetly into your design.

How Built-Ins Transform Your Space

I’ve repeated the modern set in box style book shelves for several projects now, and each one has been a game-changer. A modern built-in turns an ordinary office into a refined, tailored space that’s as practical as it is beautiful. It allows you to work efficiently while surrounded by a sense of calm and order. Who doesn’t want that?

PROJECT 1 -

Traditional Library Office with a Touch of Modern

The concept for the space was to create a traditional,

yet crisp white office.

This Office / Library was the first time I used the box style bookcases. I was, and still am thrilled with how it turned out.  The homeowners wanted a traditional Library but didn't want it to be dark, dated and old fashioned.    But yet the office needed to be wood.

The solution was to reverse the "traditional" wall panels and create a flat panel wood wall. Instead of a raised panel wood library we built a flat panel and added wood insert bookcases.  The wood inserts are stained in a color to coordinate with the light oak floors.

Although this is a very simple look, there was ALOT of planning that went into creating this room.

PROJECT 2 -

A BOOK COLLECTORS ROOM

For another recent project I designed a book collectors office with the same style built in cabinetry.  This time we had to Maximize the shelf space to accommodate a massive collection of books. The collection was even larger than I anticipated!

As always, it all starts with a plan.  For this project we had several renderings, 3-D realistic as well as line drawings to help the homeowner visualize the finished product.

3-D Rendering of Office

Line drawing perspective views of the office

In the video below you can see the bookcase boxes were set in place.

With this project we included corner shelves to accommodate as many books a possible.

The photos below were taken when the built ins were almost complete.  The library lights still needed to be installed and then nothing left to do but add the books.  We haven't had an opportunity to photograph the room professionally yet, stay tuned.

It's amazing how the 3-D rendering and the actual room as practically identical.  Renderings are a great tool to visualize spaces.

PROJECT 3:

DINING ROOM READING NOOK

For this renovation project, we transformed a former bar and game room in the dining area into a cozy reading nook.

On the left you can see the bar that previously occupied the space.  Oh and yes, that's a pool table instead of a dining table.  Then we demolished the bar and set to creating a cozy nook with built in bookcases.  Click HERE To see more of this home renovation
