Behind the Scenes: The Jill Shevlin Design Approach to Material Selection Process
At Jill Shevlin Design, material selection isn’t just a phase—it’s a philosophy. Our approach to luxury material selection in Vero Beach ensures every texture, tone, and surface is chosen with precision. From polished marble to wire-brushed oak, the materials we choose are never just beautiful—they’re strategic, personal, and curated to last.
For our Vero Beach interior design clients, selecting the right materials is one of the most exciting and essential parts of the design process. And because we know decision fatigue is real (hello, 10,000 tile options), our goal is to make this process feel streamlined, inspiring, and totally stress-free.
Step One:
Understand the Architecture and the Lifestyle to make the correct luxury material selections.
We start by studying the architecture of your home—whether it’s a new coastal build or a Mediterranean revival. This sets the tone for material decisions.
Next, we dig deep into how you live. Do you entertain often? Are there pets or grandkids running around barefoot? Do you prefer a patina or perfection? These answers help us determine not just what looks good—but what works.
Key materials we consider at this stage:
- Flooring: Wide-plank hardwoods, limestone, porcelain tile
- Countertops: Quartzite, natural stone, performance quartz
- Cabinet finishes: Paint-grade, stain-grade, lacquered options
- Wall treatments: Venetian plaster, wallpaper, custom millwork
Step Two:
Curated Selections, Not Overwhelming Options
You won’t find us throwing ten slabs of stone on a table and asking you to “pick one.” We pre-edit everything. Based on your lifestyle, architecture, and taste, we curate a small group of materials that align with your overall design plan.
Every selection is presented with context—how it feels underfoot, how it pairs with other finishes, and how it performs in a real-world setting.
We guide you through selections like:
- Tile layout patterns and grout choices
- Paint color undertones in natural light
- Metal finishes that won't clash (yes, you can mix them)
- Soft goods like drapery and upholstery textiles
Step Three:
Luxury Material selection is in the Details
Our clients expect high performance with high design—and we deliver. That means specifying the right finish in the right place. A matte-finish stone might look amazing in a powder room, but it won’t survive a family kitchen without constant upkeep. That’s why we choose smartly.
We create custom material schedules for every room so contractors and trades know exactly what goes where—no guesswork, no chaos. You can rest easy knowing the marble you loved in the showroom will end up looking just as good (and installed correctly) in your home.
Step Four: We Coordinate Everything—Start to Finish
We don’t just hand off a mood board and call it a day. Our team oversees the procurement, delivery, and installation of every selected material. If something’s back ordered, discontinued, or arrives damaged (it happens!), we handle it—fast.
Working with an experienced interior designer in Vero Beach means fewer delays, fewer mistakes, and more time enjoying your finished space.
Your Home, Your Story—Told Through Materials
Every project we design tells a story—and materials are the vocabulary. At Jill Shevlin Design, we don’t just select finishes, we craft a visual narrative that reflects your lifestyle, tastes, and dreams. Whether it's a second home by the beach or a full-time Florida residence, your home deserves materials chosen with care, expertise, and intention.
