You’d think having great taste and a big budget would protect you from design mistakes. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. I’ve worked with some incredibly savvy homeowners—real estate pros, repeat builders, business execs—and even they trip up when designing or furnishing their luxury homes.
Why? Because high-end doesn’t always mean high-functioning. Or well-planned. Or actually beautiful.
Here are the top luxury home design mistakes I see—even from experienced and savvy clients—and how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Designing for Show, Not for Life
Your home isn’t a showroom. It’s where you drink wine in yoga pants and binge-watch Netflix with your dog.
Too many luxury homes are designed for the wow factor, but not for actual living. Overly formal spaces that rarely get used. Seating that looks amazing but feels like sitting on granite. White everything, even when toddlers or red wine are involved.
How to Fix it:
Design for how you live. Want beauty and comfort? You can have both. Invest in performance fabrics, mixed finishes, and rooms that invite you to live in them.
Mistake #2: Choosing Size Over Scale
Yes, high ceilings are dreamy. But that oversized chandelier in the dining room that feels like it might fall on your branzino? Not so much.
Large homes need big pieces—but not disproportionate ones. I’ve seen sofas swallowed by cavernous great rooms and coffee tables that look like dollhouse furniture.
How to Fix it:
Design with scale and proportion in mind. Measure everything. Better yet, hire someone (hi, me!) who knows what size rug, fixture, or art piece won’t look lost or overpower a space.
Mistake #3: Skipping a Master Plan
Smart people know what they want. But sometimes they forget that a home is a whole, not a bunch of Pinterest boards.
Jumping from room to room without a cohesive plan leads to a Frankenstein house—part Miami penthouse, part Napa farmhouse, part “what were we thinking?”
How to Fix it:
Start with a master plan. Your entire home—from layout to materials to furnishings—should flow seamlessly. Even if you’re decorating in stages, your vision should be unified from the beginning.
Mistake #4: Overdoing the “Custom Everything”
Luxury often equals custom, and yes, I’m a fan (huge Fan!). But going 100% bespoke can backfire. Think: cabinetry that can’t be replaced, furniture that doesn’t fit through the front door, or finishes so rare you can’t match them later.
How to Fix it:
Mix high-end custom with smart, sourced pieces. Choose materials that are both unique and practical. Not everything needs to be one-of-a-kind to feel luxurious.

Mistake #5: Forgetting About Lighting
You can have the most beautiful room in the world, but if the lighting’s off, everything falls flat. And no, overhead recessed lights don’t count as a lighting plan.
How to Fix it:
Layer your lighting: ambient, task, and accent. Add dimmers to everything. And for the love of design, pick stunning fixtures that make a statement.
Need help? I’ve designed entire rooms around a light fixture. It’s that important.

Mistake #6: Underestimating the Timeline
Here’s a hard truth: good design takes time. Custom furnishings, contractor schedules, permitting delays—welcome to the world of luxury design.
I’ve seen clients panic-order pieces out of desperation. (Spoiler: they always regret it.)
How to Fix it:
Plan ahead. If you're building or renovating, bring in your designer early. With the right timeline, you’ll get the pieces and finishes you actually want—instead of what was available at the last minute.
Mistake #7: Ignoring the Florida Factor
Let’s get local: if you’re building or decorating in Florida—especially near the coast—there are things you must consider.
Humidity, hurricanes, salt air, and lots of sunshine impact everything from flooring to fabrics. What works up north might fall apart (literally) down here.
We absolutely LOVE performance fabrics here in Florida. Check out this article on How Performance Fabric Took Over the World
How to Fix it:
Work with someone who understands the local climate (like a Vero Beach interior designer who’s done this a few times). Choose materials and layouts that love Florida, not fight it.
